Biofuel Green Island Corridor Grant Project

Biofuel Green Island Corridor Network
In 2006, Governor Bredesen allocated $1.5 million to TDOT to develop a Biofuel Green Island Corridor network along Tennessee’s interstate system and major highways. Additionally, TDOT allocated $480,000 in funds from the federal Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement (CMAQ) program to support the installation of biofuel stations in state air quality nonattainment and maintenance areas.

The goal of the Green Island program is to help establish readily available “green island” refueling stations for B20 biodiesel and E85 ethanol no more than 100 miles apart along these corridors. This competitive grant program seeks to identify partner retail stations in areas where reasonably accessible and convenient retail biofuel stations are not in place. A minimum of 20 percent in nonfederal matching funds is required.

A statewide network of biofuel stations will encourage and expand the use of biofuels in Tennessee, which in turn will stimulate rural economic development, increase farm income, reduce vehicle emissions, help protect public health, and reduce dependence on petroleum.

During March 2010, there will be 33 E85 pumps and 33 B20 pumps open in Tennessee. TDOT is continuing to help establish more E85 and B20 pumps to give citizens and travelers renewable fuel options across the state.

New Grant Opportunity Announced
Proposals for new retail E85 and B20 pumps are now being accepted. The primary focus of this competitive grant solicitation is to complete the development of Green Island Biofuel Corridors across the state with an emphasis on priority interstate counties (see map below). A complete application package may be downloaded at the link below.
The application deadline date is April 30, 2010.
