US 64/State Route 15

Brief History

US 64 / State Route 15 is part of the National Highway System.  The improvement of this route began as an Administration and Tennessee Department of Transportation initiative in mid 1980.  The proposed improvement section stretches across 10 southern Tennessee counties beginning west in Shelby County and tying in to Interstate 24 in Grundy County.

Highway legislation in 1986 budgeted funds to begin the process for improving the route.  Studies showed a need to provide a four-lane route across southern Tennessee that would stimulate growth and economic development opportunities.  Fifty-seven project sections were identified, spanning approximately 266 miles.

The US 64 / State Route 15 improvement project has been a major undertaking by everyone involved.  The success of these projects and future successes are directly related to the cooperation and support of the residents along the route.
