Click It or Ticket - Law Enforcement Liasions

Tennessee presently employs six Law Enforcement Liaisons (LELs), four regionally based in West, Middle, Cumberland, and East Tennessee, one training coordinator and one program manager. The primary purpose for the LEL position is to serve as a link for the Governor’s Highway Safety Office to promote highway safety campaigns with local and state law enforcement agencies. Through the LEL program the GHSO strives to plan, develop and implement statewide initiatives to promote highway safety education and enforcement. Such programs include the “Click It or Ticket” and “Booze It & Lose It” campaigns. They also provide technical assistance to agencies statewide and serve as Instructors for numerous P.O.S.T. approved training courses including (Standard Field Sobriety Testing (SFST) and Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST).

LELs also oversee the development of four traffic enforcement networks within their region. Each network is comprised of 5 to 8 counties and is made up of the law enforcement agencies within the district. Each network has a Coordinator that is a full-time law enforcement officer who volunteers to coordinate network activities. (See LEL network map) The Coordinators and LEL’s work closely to organize monthly meetings and multi-agency highway safety events in the districts.

Finally, the LEL’s promote partnerships with law enforcement, prosecutors, the judicial system, and community partners. By establishing communication between each, resources can be combined and efficiency is obtained. Working toward the same goal, we have the ability impact the citizens of Tennessee in a positive manner by reducing crashes, injuries and fatalities on our roadways.
