The Beautification Office encompasses a multi-faceted group of programs ranging from regulatory control oversight to preserving, sustaining and enhancing the beauty of our Tennessee landscape.
The Outdoor Advertising Control, Vegetation Control, and Junkyard Control programs are regulatory in nature and sanctioned by statute. The Litter Grant Program allocates funding for all 95 Tennessee counties for litter abatement and litter prevention education.
The Adopt-A-Highway, Scenic Highways, and Gateways to Tennessee programs advocate environmental stewardship through partnerships and networking with community groups, individuals, civic groups, non-profits, government agencies, and businesses. These programs feature opportunities for citizens to participate in the preservation of scenic vistas, building and maintaining of new landscapes, and roadside litter pickup activities.
“Keep Tennessee Beautiful” is more than a phrase. It involves the dedication and effort of everyone to ensure the pristine beauty found in Tennessee remains for the enjoyment of future generations.
Thanks to the generous support of the soft drink and malt beverage industries, the Tennessee Department of Transportation is able to offer an extra funding opportunity totaling 1 million dollars of grant funds for Special Litter Projects that go beyond routine maintenance. Each winning proposal may be awarded a total amount of $25,000 to $100,000 in grant funds, which will be used to reimburse expenses on a quarterly basis for a maximum of 3 years.
We invite any local government, community organization or non-profit entity to apply. Eligible projects include any activity (pickup or education) that will cleanup or prevent litter in Tennessee. Recycling programs are also eligible.
The deadline for grant applications was November 15, 2012. A list of grant winners is posted below.
