State and federal laws require TDOT to assess the impacts of state and federal projects on historic resources. Under these laws, “historic” is defined as any property either listed in or eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. The National Register is a federal program administered by the National Park Service that recognizes historic properties. The National Register includes a variety of resources such as houses, commercial or industrial buildings, districts, objects, and even roads and bridges.
To be considered eligible for the National Register, properties should generally:
- Be at least 50 years old
- Possess architectural and/or historic significance
- Retain their integrity (be largely unaltered since the historic period)
Once historic resources are identified along a project corridor, TDOT historians assess the effects to those properties. The vast majority of projects (approximately 98%) do not impact historic resources.
