If you travel
on the interstates in Nashville, Memphis, Knoxville or
Chattanooga, you have probably seen those big yellow trucks with
the HELP sign on them. These are HELP trucks that TDOT has to help
motorists who have car problems, such as a flat tire or an
overheated engine, or have had an crash on the Interstate. The
operators who drive the trucks are trained in first aid, traffic
control, extinguishing vehicle fires, changing flat tires, and
other vehicle maintenance. The HELP operators' goal is to get
vehicles that have been in crashes or that have had trouble off
the Interstate and onto the shoulder, or side of interstate, in
order to keep traffic moving on the interstate and protect the
safety of the drivers. The HELP operators work with the Tennessee
Highway Patrol and local police departments and fire departments
to help drivers and to get traffic moving again on the
interstates.
