Laboratory Operations Office, which includes the Bituminous,
Chemical, Physical Testing and Soil Laboratories, serves as the
central testing laboratory for the Tennessee Department of
Transportation. These AAP (AASHTO Accreditation Program)
laboratories perform various AASHTO/ASTM tests to ensure the
materials used by the Department meet the appropriate American
Society for Testing Materials, American Association of State and
Transportation Officials, or Department specifications.

- Asphalt Mix Design & Liquid Asphalt Lab 615-350-4173 7:30 a.m.—4:30 p.m. CST
- The function of this AMRL (AASHTO Materials Reference Laboratory) certified laboratory is to perform various AASHTO/ASTM test methods. This lab investigates aggregate properties, and volumetric properties, along with the liquid properties of various mix de signs used on Tennessee's roadways.
- Chemical Lab 615‐350‐4182 7:30 a.m.—4:30 p.m. CST
- The function of the Chemical Laboratory is to perform veriﬁcation tests conﬁrming the chemical properties of numerous materials used on state highways. These materials are used in various ways and are submitted by contractors, state personnel or producers.
- Physical Lab 615-350-4190 7:00 a.m.—4:30 p.m. CST
- The function of the Physical Testing Laboratory is to perform verification tests for the physical properties of various materials used on state highway construction projects.
- Soil Lab 615-350-4187 7:00 a.m.—4:30 p.m. CST
- The function of the Soil Laboratory is to test soil and soil-related materials that are retrieved from proposed, active or completed state highway construction sites. The data is given to the Geotechnical Section and used for bearing capacity calculations (for structure foundation design and pavement design), slope stability determinations (for compaction and soil improvements), settlement calculations, and a variety of other purposes.
