Governor Bredesen Announces Jefferson City Enhancement Grant

Nashville, Tenn.—Governor Phil Bredesen announced today that the state will provide Jefferson City with an enhancement grant in the amount of $303,808 to assist with the development of Phase lll, for the Jefferson City Pedestrian Trail.

“I’m pleased the state can help Jefferson City with the development of the Jefferson City Pedestrian Trail,” said Bredesen. “These kinds of projects contribute not only to community development, but also to increasing public safety. I look forward to visiting Jefferson City to see the completed project.”

While making the announcement on behalf of the Governor, Tennessee Department of Transportation Commissioner Gerald Nicely credited State Senator Mike Williams with helping to secure the grant for the Jefferson County city.

“This will be an important asset for Jefferson City,” said Senator Williams. “It is the next step toward completing the Master Plan for trails for the city, it is a well-thought-out community plan that is truly a team effort.”

The grant is made possible through a federally funded program administered by the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT). Commissioner Nicely explained that in the early 1990s, Congress set up a system of funding for activities designed to strengthen the cultural, aesthetic and environmental aspects of the nation’s transportation system. During the last 14 years, more than $154 million dollars in projects have been funded in communities all across Tennessee.

“Such grant funded activities include historic transportation facilities, bike and pedestrian trails, landscaping and many other non-traditional transportation projects,” said Nicely.

The project will start at Old A.J. Highway. The points of interest on this trail section include Carson Newman College, Post Office Recreation Park and the Historic Hill Mansion.

Representative Frank Niceley also represents Jefferson County in the Tennessee General Assembly.
