TDOT’S SmartFIX40 Summit Hill Detour Map Now Available
Designed to save drivers from heartache

Nashville, Tn.—As the Tennessee Department of Transportation “gets to the heart “of the SmartFIX40 construction project with the biggest road closure yet scheduled just one week from today, TDOT is distributing a map to help save drivers from heartache.

“We have a map that we are sharing throughout the city via email, business and neighborhood associations and merchants, that will include detours to help people find their way around the upcoming Summit Hill Drive Bridge and ramp closure,” said Judy Steele, Director, TDOT Community Relations Division. “This will be the first time the massive SmartFIX40 project will inconvenience a large number of people and we are doing trying our best to prepare the public.”

The bridge and ramp will be closed for approximately 8 months beginning February 21. Approximately 15,000 vehicles use the Summit Hill Drive Bridge and 6,300 use the Summit Hill ramp coming into or going out of downtown Knoxville each day.

The demolition and reconstruction of the bridge will provide the additional space necessary to widen James White Parkway which is underneath the structure. The bridge will also be widened from three to six lanes.

A detour will be posted in order to direct motorists around the closure as well as into and out of downtown and the Old City. The detour will be as follows:

  • Bridge detour- Take Central Street to Willow Avenue to Patton Street.
  • To downtown- From James White Parkway take the Cumberland Avenue exit to Gay Street to Summit Hill Drive.
  • From Downtown- Take Summit Hill Drive to Locust Street to Clinch Avenue to Henley Street to access the tunnel and any direction of the Interstate.
