Loudon County I-40 Bridge Update
Knoxville, Tenn.—The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) will
be installing temporary supports for the damaged sections of the I-40
overpass bridge at exit 364 in Loudon County. Due to the size and location
of the temporary supports, U.S. 321 will be reduced to one lane in each
direction under the bridge.
Once the temporary supports are in place the right lane of I-40 westbound
will be reopened. This lane has been closed since Tuesday morning when a
garbage truck traveling on U.S. 321 struck the bridge damaging a steel
bridge beam and concrete bridge deck. Construction crews are working to have
both lanes of I-40 westbound open by the weekend.
An emergency contract will be awarded for permanent repairs to the
bridge, with work to begin as soon as possible. Once the permanent repairs
are underway I-40 will again be reduced to one lane across the bridge.
