Governor Bredesen Announces Enhancement Grant for Chattanooga Nashville, Tenn. – Governor Phil Bredesen announced today that the state will provide the city of Chattanooga in Hamilton County with an enhancement grant in the amount of $737,585 to assist with the North Chickamauga Greenway Project. “This project will add immensely to the already nationally acclaimed Tennessee Riverpark,” said Governor Bredesen. “It will enhance Chattanooga’s position as an attractive city in which to live, work, and play. I’m proud the State of Tennessee can make investments like this to enhance local communities for the benefit of citizens and visitors alike.” “The national attention paid to our riverfront has already resulted in the selection of Chattanooga as a host for major events,” added Representative Tommie Brown. “The addition of this Greenway will only add to the city’s appeal.” This project will link the Tennessee Riverpark to the North Chickamauga Creek Greenway along North Chickamauga Creek, which flows into the Tennessee River. It will feature a new 20 foot wide pedestrian/bicycle facility that runs approximately 1,000 feet to the north shore of the Tennessee River. “It’s exciting to watch the revitalization of Chattanooga’s riverfront,” said Senator Ward Crutchfield. “I will continue to be committed to a project that is a source of pride for us all.” “Extending the Waterfront and Tennessee Riverpark will create new opportunities for visitors and residents alike to take advantage of Chattanooga’s scenic outdoor amenities,” said Representative JoAnne Favors. The grant is made possible through a federally funded program administered by the Tennessee Department of Transportation. “Including this year’s enhancement grants, TDOT has helped fund approximately $189 million worth of transportation related projects such as the restoration of historic facilities, bike and pedestrian trails, landscaping and other non-traditional transportation projects,” said TDOT Commissioner Gerald Nicely. “These grants were made possible in the 1990s when Congress established a grant system funding activities designed to strengthen the cultural, aesthetic and environmental aspects of the nation’s transportation system.” Millions of residents and visitors use the Tennessee Riverpark and the 21st Century Waterfront every year. |
