Governor Bredesen Announces Enhancement Grant for Waverly Nashville, Tenn. -- Governor Phil Bredesen announced today that the state will provide the city of Waverly in Humphreys County with an enhancement grant in the amount of $353,333 to assist with Phase II of the Waverly Greenway Trail. The recently completed Phase I features 10,000 feet of greenway. Phase II will further extend the greenway trail another 8,000 feet. “I’m pleased the state is able to help further a project that will provide the citizens of Waverly with a safe and accessible place to enjoy many outdoor activities,” said Governor Bredesen. “This is the second grant we have provided for this project, and I’m proud the State of Tennessee can make investments like this one that enhance local communities for the benefit of our citizens and visitors alike.” “For many years, I have been committed to helping give the residents of our community a safe place in which to live and work,” added Representative John Tidwell. “Phase II of the Waverly Greenway Trail will serve this purpose.” Once complete, the greenway trail will improve the transportation corridor along Powers Boulevard and Airport Road because of the heavy traffic competing with walkers, joggers, and bicyclists. “This project will provide benefits for many people for years to come,” stated Senator Doug Jackson. “I’m happy I was able to assist in bringing this important enhancement grant to Humphreys County.” The grant is made possible through a federally funded program administered by the Tennessee Department of Transportation. “Including this year’s enhancement grants, TDOT has helped fund approximately $189 million worth of transportation related projects such as the restoration of historic facilities, bike and pedestrian trails, landscaping and other non-traditional transportation projects,” said TDOT Commissioner Gerald Nicely. “These grants were made possible in the 1990s when Congress established a grant system funding activities designed to strengthen the cultural, aesthetic and environmental aspects of the nation’s transportation system.” The city of Waverly, the county seat of Humphreys County, is situated in a valley among the rolling hills of Middle Tennessee. It is also known as the land of Three Rivers, due to its proximity to the Duck, Buffalo, and Tennessee Rivers. |
