Governor Bredesen Announces Enhancement Grant for Harriman Nashville, Tenn. — Governor Phil Bredesen announced today that the state will provide the city of Harriman in Roane County with an enhancement grant in the amount of $284,952 to assist with the development of the Cornstalk Heights Historic District Lighting and Trail Project. “This grant will allow Harriman to move forward with the vision of taking Cornstalk Heights back to the beauty it enjoyed in the 1950s, only better,” said Governor Bredesen. “I’m proud the State of Tennessee can make investments like this one to enhance the integrity and historic presence of Cornstalk Heights for the benefit of citizens and visitors alike.” “The trail includes new decorative sidewalks for Morgan and Walden Streets as well as decorative lighting,” added Senator Tommy Kilby. “This project will result in a trail that we will all be able to enjoy.” “In Cornstalk Heights, many of the sidewalks have turned to dirt. This will be quite an improvement and I’m glad I was able to help,” stated Representative Dennis Ferguson. The grant is made possible through a federally funded program administered by the Tennessee Department of Transportation. “Including this year’s enhancement grants, TDOT has helped fund approximately $189 million worth of transportation related projects such as the restoration of historic facilities, bike and pedestrian trails, landscaping and other non-traditional transportation projects,” said TDOT Commissioner Gerald Nicely. “These grants were made possible in the 1990s when Congress established a grant system funding activities designed to strengthen the cultural, aesthetic and environmental aspects of the nation’s transportation system.” |
