Governor Bredesen Announces Enhancement Grant for La Vergne Nashville, Tenn. — Governor Phil Bredesen announced today that the state will provide the city of La Vergne in Rutherford County with an enhancement grant in the amount of $123,200 to assist with the Chaney Boulevard Sidewalks Project. “Every child deserves a safe path to take while walking to school, and that is what this project will provide for the students who attend La Vergne High School,” said Governor Bredesen. “I’m proud the State of Tennessee can make important investments like this to enhance local communities.” “This project was a big priority of mine,” added Representative Kent Coleman. “A sidewalk may seem like a simple thing, but it’s an expensive proposition and now we are able to do what we need to do in La Vergne.” The grant is made possible through a federally funded program administered by the Tennessee Department of Transportation. “Including this year’s enhancement grants, TDOT has helped fund approximately $189 million worth of transportation related projects such as the restoration of historic facilities, bike and pedestrian trails, landscaping and other non-traditional transportation projects,” said TDOT Commissioner Gerald Nicely. “These grants were made possible in the 1990s when Congress established a grant system funding activities designed to strengthen the cultural, aesthetic and environmental aspects of the nation’s transportation system.” According to the grant application, the sidewalk project will be located between Sam Ridley Parkway and Old Nashville Highway in La Vergne. The sidewalks will run from the Smyrna border in front of La Vergne High School, along the east side of Chaney Boulevard to the intersection at Old Nashville Highway. Senator Jim Tracy also represents Rutherford County in the Tennessee General Assembly. |
