Governor Bredesen Announces Grant for Sparta

Nashville, Tenn. — Governor Phil Bredesen announced today that the state will provide the city of Sparta in White County with an enhancement grant in the amount of $245,872 to assist with the development of the Sparta Walkway and Trailhead Project.

“This grant will support Sparta’s overall effort to link key attractions in the city through a number of innovative projects,” said Governor Bredesen. “I’m proud the State of Tennessee can make investments like this to enhance local communities for citizens and visitors alike.”

“This project is a priority of mine and I’m happy to have been able to help secure this grant for Sparta and White County,” added Senator Charlotte Burks.

“This walkway will connect White County High School, Middle School and Vocational School with the Sparta Recreational Complex and the YMCA,” stated Representative Charles Curtiss. “Many people will rely on this trail when it is complete. It will be an important new asset for the city.”

The grant is made possible through a federally funded program administered by the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

“Including this year’s enhancement grants, TDOT has helped fund approximately $189 million worth of transportation related projects such as the restoration of historic facilities, bike and pedestrian trails, landscaping and other non-traditional transportation projects,” said TDOT Commissioner Gerald Nicely. “These grants were made possible in the 1990s when Congress established a grant system funding activities designed to strengthen the cultural, aesthetic and environmental aspects of the nation’s transportation system.”

According to the grant application, the walkway will run along North Spring Street, Polk Street and Breeding Drive for a length of 2,600 feet.
