Bredesen Announces Enhancement Grant for City of Cowan in Franklin County Nashville, Tenn. - Governor Phil Bredesen joined state and local leaders today to announce a transportation enhancement grant in the amount of $172,400 for Phase Two of the Cowan Community Walkway Project in Franklin County. The grant funds will be used to add 6,940 feet of ADA-compliant walkway system in the City of Cowan’s comprehensive walkway plan. The new walkway system will provide better pedestrian flow and encourage non-motorized transportation. “It’s important for citizens to have safe, efficient walkway systems that are accessible to everyone,” said Governor Bredesen. “Cowan has a large number of citizens who regularly use the current walkway system. This project will give them a new walkway that they can safely enjoy.” “Projects such as these make Tennessee’s communities more livable,” said Representative George Fraley. “I am pleased to have helped bring this grant to Cowan.” The grant is made possible through a federally funded program administered by the Tennessee Department of Transportation. “TDOT has funded more than $189 million in transportation related projects through our Enhancement Grant Program,” said TDOT Commissioner Gerald Nicely. “This program provides funds to cities, counties and state organizations to fund activities such as the restoration of historic facilities, bike and pedestrian trails, landscaping, streetscaping and other non-traditional transportation projects.” The federal grant program was established by Congress in the early 1990’s to fund activities designed to strengthen the cultural, aesthetic and environmental aspects of the nation’s transportation system. Phase Two of the Cowan Community Walkway will take place along portions of several streets that are connected to the main thoroughfare. This will provide better facilities for pedestrians and bicyclists, preserve the downtown historic/commercial district, and provide adequate access from residential areas to commercial areas. |
