Bredesen Announces Enhancement Grant for City of Covington in Tipton Co. Nashville, Tenn. - Governor Phil Bredesen joined state and local leaders today to announce a transportation enhancement grant in the amount of $823,226 for phase three of the Covington Courthouse Square project. The grant funds will be used for sidewalk, crosswalk, drainage and lighting improvements along West Pleasant Avenue from Munford Street to Highway 51 and on North Main Street from West Liberty Avenue to Spring Street. “The city of Covington has already revitalized the courthouse square. These funds will help improve the entryways to the square, creating new gateways into this town center,” said Governor Bredesen. “I’m pleased the state is able to provide funds for this enhancement project.” “This grant allows the city of Covington the ability to extend the Courthouse Square revitalization project, which began in 2004,” said House Speaker Jimmy Naifeh. “This is a much needed project for our area, as we have numerous visitors daily that will benefit from its completion.” The grant is made possible through a federally funded program administered by the Tennessee Department of Transportation. “TDOT has funded more than $189 million in transportation related projects through our Enhancement Grant Program,” said TDOT Commissioner Gerald Nicely. “This program provides funds to cities, counties and state organizations to fund activities such as the restoration of historic facilities, bike and pedestrian trails, landscaping, streetscaping and other non-traditional transportation projects.” The federal grant program was established by Congress in the early 1990’s to fund activities designed to strengthen the cultural, aesthetic and environmental aspects of the nation’s transportation system.
