TDOT funds interstate resurfacing.
This program currently maintains 1,104 miles of interstate highways to
provide the best possible riding conditions. When the miles are measured by
the number of lanes, the mileage adds up to 5,025 total lane miles.
Tennessee’s highways have been ranked among the top five in the nation
for eight years in a row by the country’s truckers. In 2006, Interstate 40
in Tennessee was named the best road in the nation.
The department currently resurfaces most interstate sections on an
average cycle of 11 years. Through this program, TDOT resurfaces about 65
miles of interstate each year, which is 282 lane miles per year.
A well-maintained and properly managed interstate highway system is
critical to preserve the taxpayers’ investment in this highly demanded
transportation system.
The department awards approximately 10 interstate resurfacing contracts
per year.
