 The
Governor's Highway Safety Office (GHSO) is Tennessee's advocate for
highway safety. This office works with law enforcement, judicial
personnel and community advocates to coordinate activities and
initiatives relating to the human behavioral aspects of highway safety.
The GHSO's mission is to develop, execute and evaluate programs to
reduce the number of fatalities, injuries and related economic losses
resulting from traffic crashes on Tennessee's roadways.

The 3M Traffic Safety Systems Division is proud to support the Tennessee
DOT’s Between the Barrels
initiative. As a world leader in transportation safety products and
systems for more than 60 years, 3M has forged many global partnerships
to support work zone and roadway safety efforts. 3M employs advanced
technologies that enhance roadway safety, efficiency and traffic
management through signing, pavement marking, vehicle registration and
intelligent transportation solutions. Based in St. Paul, Minn., 3M
produces more than 50,000 products. In addition to transportation
safety, the company serves a broad range of markets, including
industrial, health care, consumer, communications, electronics, display
and graphics, and safety, security and protection.
 In
1928 a group of contractors in Tennessee organized an association whose
sole aims would be to promote better contracting and conditions, to
clarify specifications, and last, but certainly the most important, to
secure the cooperation of the highway department through the
commissioner of highways. Thus was the beginning of the Tennessee Road
Builders Association (TRBA). Starting with 22 contracting firms and four
equipment and materials dealers and $15,000, TRBA has grown to nearly
400 contractors and associates state-wide.
Founded
in 1902, Lamar currently operates more than 150
outdoor advertising companies in more than 40 states and Puerto Rico.
Presently, Lamar's six facilities in Tennessee, with 162 employees,
operate and
maintain more than 7,300 billboards. With emphasis on safety in the
workplace and homes of our employees, Lamar takes pride in supporting
TDOT's Between the Barrels safety education program for our state's young
drivers.

The Virginia Department of Transportation is committed
to spreading the work zone safety message to youth, and is partnering
with the Tennessee Department of Transportation to assist in TDOT's work
zone safety program. 2007 will mark the tenth year that VDOT has
recognized a statewide Work Zone Awareness Week. Because of the high
percentage of young drivers who are killed in car crashes, VDOT
partnered in 2004 with what is now the Virginia Transportation
Construction Alliance to reach as many high school driver education
students as possible through volunteer work zone safety presentations.
So far, VDOT has reached more than 53,000 students across the
commonwealth.

The Tennessee Department of Safety is the parent agency of the
Tennessee Highway Patrol which is responsible for the enforcement of all
federal and state laws relating to traffic. The Tennessee Highway
Patrol’s program Project CAR (Construction Accident Reduction) places
Highway Patrol Troopers in work zones across the state targeting
motorists who violate traffic laws while traveling through highway work
zones when road workers are present. Throughout the history of the
program no fatal accident has occurred in work zones where a State
Trooper was present. To date, the CAR program has resulted in more than
24,000 citations and warnings written to motorists for violations in
work zones. The goals of Project CAR include:
- Increasing visibility and enforcement in assigned zones
- Providing assistance to stranded motorists
- Maintaining an active patrol of the entire work zone
- Aggressively enforcing safety belt and child passenger restraint
